Sunny

Sunny was the Obama family's second Portuguese water dog — a playful, energetic companion for Bo who doubled the doggy joy in the White House.

In August 2013, the Obama family welcomed a new member: Sunny, a female Portuguese water dog. The decision was easy — Bo had been such a wonderful addition to the family that the Obamas decided he needed a playmate. Sunny was a gift, and she arrived at the White House as a seven-month-old puppy.

Sunny was full of energy. She loved to chase Bo around the White House grounds, and the two dogs became inseparable. They were frequently seen running together on the South Lawn, playing fetch, and greeting White House visitors. Sunny was a little more mischievous than Bo — she was known to steal shoes and chew on White House furniture.

Like Bo, Sunny became a media darling. She appeared in official White House photographs, had her own holiday cards, and was featured in the Obama family's book about their pets. The two dogs were so popular that the White House had a running joke about 'First Dog duties.'

Sunny lived through the remainder of the Obama presidency and moved with the family when they left the White House. She and Bo lived together for the rest of Bo's life, and she remains a beloved member of the Obama family.
