Millie

Millie was the most famous English Springer Spaniel in American history — a loyal family dog who literally wrote a book.

Millie joined the Bush family in 1987, when George H.W. Bush was vice president. When he became president in 1989, Millie moved into the White House and quickly became a national celebrity. She was a friendly, energetic dog who loved the spotlight.

Millie was famous for something no other presidential pet has done: she "wrote" a book. Millie's Book, a memoir written from Millie's perspective (with some help from Barbara Bush), became a bestseller. It raised nearly $1 million for literacy charities. The book was full of "interviews" with other White House pets and stories about life at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

In 1989, Millie had a litter of puppies in the White House. One of them, Spot, would later return to the White House when George W. Bush became president — making Spot the first (and so far only) pet to live in the White House under two different presidents.

Millie was also known for her strong personality. She was protective of the Bush family and had a habit of barking at reporters. She was so beloved that Barbara Bush included her in her own memoirs. Millie passed away in 1997, but her legacy lives on — her book is still in libraries across America.
