Bo

Bo was the Obama family's Portuguese water dog — a black, curly-haired bundle of energy who became one of the most famous presidential pets of the modern era.

Bo was a gift from Senator Ted Kennedy to the Obama daughters, Malia and Sasha. The Kennedy family had Portuguese water dogs themselves, and they knew the breed was perfect for the White House. Bo arrived in April 2009, just a few months after President Obama took office.

Bo was a star from day one. He appeared in official White House photographs, ran on the South Lawn, and was featured in books and TV shows. He had his own unofficial Twitter account (run by fans) and was the subject of countless articles. The first dog was a media sensation.

Bo was known for his playful personality. He loved to swim (fitting for a Portuguese water dog), chase squirrels, and greet visitors at the White House. He was also loyal to the Obama family, especially the girls. He slept on Malia's bed and followed her around the house.

In 2013, the Obamas got a second Portuguese water dog, Sunny, to keep Bo company. Bo and Sunny were inseparable. When the Obamas left the White House in 2017, Bo went with them to Washington, D.C., where they stayed for Sasha's schooling. He died in 2021 at the age of 12, a beloved member of the family.
