Macaroni
Macaroni was Caroline Kennedy's beloved pony — a gray Welsh pony who brought a touch of childhood joy to the White House during some very serious times.
When the Kennedy family moved into the White House in 1961, John F. Kennedy promised his daughter Caroline she could have a pony. And not just any pony — a pony named Macaroni. He was a gift from Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson's family, and he became a beloved part of the Kennedy White House.
Macaroni lived at the White House stables and was a regular sight on the South Lawn. Caroline would ride him around the grounds, often with her mother Jackie watching nearby. Photographers loved capturing the image of Caroline on Macaroni — it was a perfect picture of a happy childhood in the most famous house in America.
Macaroni was famous for being a bit mischievous. He was known to nibble at the White House rose bushes and occasionally chase the groundskeepers. But the Kennedy family adored him, and the White House staff learned to work around his antics.
After President Kennedy's assassination in 1963, the Kennedy family moved out of the White House. Macaroni went with them to their new home in Virginia, where he lived out his days in a quiet pasture, far from the cameras and the crowds.
