Commander was Joe Biden's third German shepherd, a rambunctious puppy who joined the family after Champ's death and Major's departure โ and made headlines for biting Secret Service agents more than 24 times.
Commander joined the Biden family in December 2021, a purebred German shepherd puppy given to the president by his brother James Biden. The puppy was named Commander, a fitting title for a dog who would grow up in the most powerful house in the world. The Bidens hoped Commander would fill the void left by Champ's death and Major's departure.
Commander was a typical exuberant puppy, full of energy and curiosity. He grew fast, reaching over 100 pounds, and his playful nature sometimes got the better of him. The White House grounds were his playground, and he was a familiar sight to staff and Secret Service agents patrolling the executive mansion and its grounds.
Commander developed a notorious reputation for biting. Between October 2022 and July 2023, the Secret Service recorded at least 24 biting incidents involving Commander and Secret Service agents. The bites ranged from minor nips to more serious injuries that required medical attention. The White House acknowledged the incidents, explaining that Commander was still a young, energetic dog in a high-stress environment. The Biden family worked with trainers to address the behavior.
Despite the biting incidents, the Bidens remained committed to Commander. He was a beloved family pet who adored the president and first lady. When the Bidens left the White House in January 2025, Commander retired to Delaware with them, where he could enjoy a more relaxed life away from the pressures of the White House โ and the Secret Service agents who bore the brunt of his enthusiasm.
