Barney

Barney was George W. Bush's Scottish terrier and the star of the famous "Barney Cam" holiday videos that became one of the first viral internet sensations from the White House.

Barney was born in September 2000 and joined the Bush family before George W. Bush took office. A purebred Scottish terrier with a confident, spirited personality, Barney quickly adapted to White House life. He was named after Barney, the Bush family dog from George H.W. Bush's era — though that Barney was actually named after the baseball umpire.

Barney became a media phenomenon in the early 2000s when the Bush administration began producing "Barney Cam" videos. Shot from a camera strapped to Barney's collar, these short films showed the White House from a dog's perspective—Barney running through the halls, stealing treats, and getting into mischief. The videos were released around Christmas and became a beloved holiday tradition.

Barney was no stranger to the spotlight. He greeted world leaders, accompanied the president to Camp David, and had his own page on the White House website. He was known for his friendly demeanor, though he had a famous rivalry with the White House press corps — he once bit a reporter who got too close to the president's desk.

After the Bushes left Washington, Barney enjoyed a quiet retirement in Dallas, Texas. He passed away in February 2013. The White House press secretary released a statement calling him "a beloved companion and a loyal friend."
